McDowell County Schools will be closed on Thursday, February 22nd and Friday, February 23rd due to an expected statewide work stoppage for all school employees. This closure will not result in loss of instructional time for our students, as these days will be made up later in the school year.
The WVSSAC has announced that athletic tournaments will not be changed due to a work stoppage. Therefore, McDowell County Schools plans to proceed with all extracurricular activities.
We remain hopeful an agreement will be reached to prevent any further school closures. Should an agreement be reached or other important information become available, I will notify you immediately using our phone messaging system and social media.
McDowell County Schools values the support of our families, communities, and staff. We are working to minimize the disruption to our schools and communities that a work stoppage may create. Please be assured, the safety and education of our students are always our top priorities.

On December 18th, McDowell County Board of Education members recognized McDowell County Spelling Bee winners Miranda Branham-Sandy River Middle and Isaac Fowler-Anawalt Elementary. Also recognized were McDowell County basketball and cheerleading first place champs from Kimball elementary school.
Congratulations to Fall River Elementary and the Career and Technology Center for their attendance efforts for the third month of school. The Career and Technology Center won the staff attendance award with 98% and Fall River won the student attendance award with 96%. Who will win the fourth month? #attendancematters #CountyStrong
On October 2, 2017, McDowell County Schools' Career Technology Center shared information about their Simulated Work Place, which allows students to participate in an authentic workplace culture. The students shared 12 key protocols that frame the program.

Policy 8-034, Employee Use of Paid and Unpaid Leave Time, has been revised and approved by the McDowell County Board of Education. All personnel holding extra-curricular positions need to be aware of new guidelines established in this policy.
