National Honor Society

10th Grade Students

As a Junior, students with a 3.5 GPA are eligible to considered for candidacy into the River View High School Chapter of the National Honor Society.  With a

3.5 GPA, you meet the Scholarship requirement.

 

There are 3 other criteria that the candidate must possessed and demonstrated to be nominated for, voted for, and inducted into the NHS. 

Those are: Leadership, Service, and Character.

Leadership is wholesome, good, positive influence on the school, the classroom, team mates and classmates and peers or other community activities.  Be able to prove you have leadership skills.  Those who just sit back in the classroom and don’t volunteer to speak, do thing for teachers, other students,

Service is assisting other people, individuals, groups, clubs inside the school with anything such as: tutoring, assisting teachers or any other students with anything, peer mentors, volunteering around the school for any activity, volunteering to work in the community for the school, club functions or churches or community organizations: Lions Club, Kiwanis, without expecting anything in return.  You must be able to prove your involvement with a club such as Key Club, SADD Club, or a church / church organization that does selfless acts for the community and provide a signed document by club advisor or preacher/church member verifying you have participated in at least 20 hours of service per year to either the school, community, or church.

Character is not only your reputation as how others view you in the school and in the community, but the force within each person that makes them honest, responsible, dedicated, reliable, trustworthy, fair, sincere, dependable, courteous and polite, good morals, good values, make good decisions, and good behavior and attitude in all situations in school, home and community.  You school attendance rate is part of your character and responsibility to school.  You conduct outside of school is just as important as your behavior in school.  Social Media statuses may be checked and may be a very large portion of your character points.

 

Attendance and Tardiness to school and classes will be taken into consideration for your acceptance in the NHS and whether you will remain in good standing or probationary status.

Behavior No suspensions, no expulsions, no repetitive habitual disciplinary issues with any teacher or office resulting in 2 or more detentions as per the school handbook, no documented disciplinary issues with cheating on assignments.  One minor discipline issue, level 1, from Freshman year with no other documented incidences in Sophomore and/or Junior years will be overlooked by the committee as a learning experience and not held against the candidate.

Just because you have the grade point average does not mean that you will automatically be inducted into the NHS.  You will have to type an essay using correct grammar, spellings, sentence structure

Failure to maintain the 3.5 GPA will automatically disqualify you from the NHS, and you will be dismissed.  Failure to maintain good behavior, good character, leadership, or service may cause you to be dismissed as well.  Grades, discipline records and other reports will be reviewed annually and more frequently if deemed necessary by the advisor, principal, or committee.  Social media may be checked at any time. 

 

NHS Members and Potential Members,

There are FOUR areas of consideration for the National Honor Society: Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service.  Becoming a member of and maintaining status of River View National Honor Society are as follows:

  • You must have and maintain a 3.5 overall GPA
  • You must not have any documented discipline issues from any teacher, staff, or administrator
  • You must not have more than 5 tardies either to school or class
  • You must not have more than 2 unexcused absences to school
  • Members must not be in any Credit Recovery Classes in Junior or Senior years

Sponsor will check all GPA records and discipline reports at the end of the 1st semester and before the induction ceremony for verification of status and discuss all issues with the administration and the River View National Honor Society Committee.

You will type an essay using correct grammar, spellings, sentence structure of why you feel you are a good candidate for the RVHS Chapter of the NHS in regards to Character, Leadership, and Service and give it to the Sponsor, Vivian Barker, by Friday, March 2, 2018.  (This is for new candidates only.)

Behavior No suspensions, no expulsions, no repetitive habitual disciplinary issues with any teacher or administration, no documented disciplinary issues resulting in 2 or more detentions, no documented disciplinary issues with cheating on assignments.  One minor discipline issue, level 1, from Freshman year with no other documented incidences in Sophomore and/or Junior years will be overlooked by the committee as a learning experience and not held against the candidate.

Failure to maintain the 3.5 GPA at the end of any semester will automatically put you on probation with the option of raising GPA back to the standard level.  A second drop in GPA verified by the end of the semester reports will cause you to be dismissed.  Failure to maintain good behavior, good character, leadership, or service may cause you to be dismissed as well.  For minor infractions, a one semester probationary period will be issued.  A second issue with minor discipline or the first major issue will cause you to be dismissed.  Grades, discipline records and other reports will be reviewed each semester and more frequently if deemed necessary by the advisor, principal, or committee.
