We realize your child may be reluctant to share information on how their day went at school. We often ask the following questions when they come home from school. We are easily frustrated with their response and the conversations end.
1) What did you do at school today? NOTHING
2) Do you have homework? NO
Try the conversation starters below to engage in a meaningful conversations with your
child. This is a powerful way to learn information and partner in learning,

  • What new thing did you learn during (subject) today?
  • What is something that you learned today that you didn't know yesterday?
  • What struggles did you have today and how did you overcome them?
  •  Why did you choose the book that you are reading? Tell me your feelings about the story so far.
  • What skill did you practice and learn in math today? How do you plan to get better at the skill?
  • What is something you learned today that you think you will need in your future career when you finish school?
  • Teach me something. Pretend you are the teacher and t am you. Teach me something you learned today.

Build a relationship with your child's teacher. Ask them to regularly share what your child will learn each week. This way you will know content specific questions that correlated with learning. Example: "This week you are studying fractions in math. Do you find working with fractions easy or hard? Why?"
